Chapter 4 - Unlikely Allies

I walked out of the precinct feeling like a target had been painted on my back.

I couldn’t go home; my house was wrapped in yellow crime scene tape.

I checked into a cheap motel on the edge of town under my maiden name.

A few hours later, there was a knock at my door.

I looked through the peephole and gasped.

It was Laura.

I opened the door, keeping the chain lock secured.

“What do you want?” I demanded.

“I want to help you destroy him,” she said, her eyes red and swollen.

I hesitated, but something in her desperate expression made me unlatch the door.

She walked in and dropped a heavy leather bound journal onto the bed.

“Chloe is in intensive care, but she told me where James hid his real records.”

“Why are you giving this to me?” I asked, staring at the book.

“Because he told me the basement was locked because of a mold infestation.”

Laura broke down, covering her face with her hands.

“I slept in that house while my sister was chained beneath my feet.”

“He told me he was helping her get into a luxury rehab facility.”

“He used my grief, and he used your money.”

I opened the journal, flipping through pages of handwritten ledgers.

There were names, offshore account numbers, and passwords.

It was the smoking gun that proved James was controlling the money.

“Will you testify to this?” I asked her.

“I’ll do whatever it takes to watch him rot,” she promised.

For the first time since this nightmare began, I didn’t feel completely alone.

The ex-wife and the fake wife were finally on the same team.
