Chapter 2 - The House of Lies

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder by the second.
The reporter kept his knee planted firmly on James’s back.
James’s mother stood in the corner, her face completely unreadable.
“You knew,” I said, turning to her with absolute disgust. “You brought them here because you knew the police were closing in.”
She refused to look at me, staring blankly at the wall.
Paramedics burst through the front door, rushing down to the basement.
They carried Chloe up on a stretcher, an oxygen mask already strapped to her face.
As they rolled her past us, her hollow eyes locked onto James.
“He took them,” she croaked, her voice barely audible.
“Took what?” the investigator asked gently, walking beside the stretcher.
“The patients,” she whispered. “He sold us.”
The room spun around me as the horrific reality set in.
The private medical clinic in my name wasn’t just a scam.
It was a black-market operation, and I was the legal owner on paper.
Local police officers swarmed the house, slapping handcuffs on James.
He finally looked at me as they pulled him to his feet.
“Rachel, I can explain everything,” he pleaded, his voice cracking.
“You’re a monster,” I spat, stepping away from him.
“I did it for us!” he screamed as they dragged him out the door.
Laura was crying hysterically on the couch, clutching a throw pillow.
The investigator approached me with a grim expression on his face.
“Ma'am, we are going to need to seize this property as a crime scene.”
“Where am I supposed to go?” I asked, numb from the shock.
“I highly recommend you call a very good lawyer,” he replied.

I realized then that James hadn’t just ruined my marriage.
He had orchestrated a plan to let me take the fall for his atrocities.
