Chapter 6 - The Cornered Rat

Julian’s desperation reached a breaking point. Facing millions in civil damages, a looming federal indictment for corporate theft, and total social excommunication, his mind began to fracture.

He needed money. He knew about the emergency safe hidden in the floorboards of the master bedroom—a safe that contained a hundred thousand dollars in emergency cash and family heirlooms.

It was a rainy Tuesday night. I was alone in the house, trying to finalize the inventory of Lily’s belongings before the movers came the next morning.

I heard the sound of shattering glass from the kitchen.

My training as a trauma surgeon had taught me how to stay perfectly calm in high-adrenaline situations. I didn't scream. I quietly slipped out of the bedroom, locking the door behind me, and moved toward the top of the staircase.

I saw a figure moving frantically through the shadows of the first floor, wielding a crowbar. Lightning flashed through the living room windows, illuminating Julian’s face. He looked deranged, his clothes soaked, his eyes wild and sunken.

“Sarah!” he screamed, his voice cracking. “I know you’re up there! Open the safe! I just need the cash to get out of the country, and you’ll never see me again!”

I pulled out my phone and dialed 911, then sent a rapid SOS text to Evan, who lived only three blocks away.

“You are trespassing, Julian,” I called out from the darkness of the landing. “The police are already on their way. Leave now.”

“You ruined my life!” he roared, charging toward the stairs. “You and your psychotic father stripped me of everything! It’s your fault she left me!”

He didn't mean Lily. He meant Vanessa. Even now, his only grief was for himself.
