Chapter 10 - The Sunrise

Five years later.

The sun streamed through the large bay windows of our countryside home, casting a warm, golden glow over the hardwood floors.

I stood in the kitchen, sipping my morning coffee, watching the scene unfold in the backyard. Evan was running across the grass, holding a small, brightly colored kite, while a tiny, giggling force of nature chased after him on wobbly legs.

Her name was Maya. She was two years old, with Evan’s messy brown curls and my bright green eyes.

She wasn't a replacement for Lily. Nobody could ever replace my firstborn. But Maya was a testament to the fact that the human heart has an infinite capacity to expand. Grief had carved a massive hole in my soul, but love had filled it back up, leaving me with a profound appreciation for every single heartbeat.

My father sat at the patio table, reading the morning paper. The ruthless billionaire had completely softened into a doting grandfather, spending his retirement spoiling Maya rotten and managing the finances of Lily’s Foundation.

Julian was a fading memory, locked away in a federal penitentiary. The empire he tried to steal had thrived without him, and the woman he had abandoned me for was a cautionary tale in the corporate world, completely blacklisted from the industry.

Evan caught the kite as it dipped, scooping Maya up into his arms and spinning her around until she shrieked with pure, unadulterated joy. He looked over at me through the window and smiled—a smile that promised safety, loyalty, and unconditional love.

I set my coffee mug down on the counter. Next to it sat a framed photograph of a little girl with a missing front tooth and a stuffed bunny tucked under her arm. I gently touched the glass, tracing Lily’s smile.

“We made it, sweetie,” I whispered to the photo. “We’re okay.”

I opened the back door and walked out into the sunlight to join my family, letting the warmth wash over me. The storm had finally passed, and the rest of my life was waiting.
