Chapter 1 - The Wrath of the Patriarch

My father did not shout. Richard Vance was a man who moved markets with a whisper; he had never needed to raise his voice to destroy a life.
He stepped out of the elevator, his tailored charcoal overcoat sweeping against the sterile hospital floor. His eyes, cold and sharp as cracked ice, took in the scene. He saw my tear-streaked face. He saw the empty, devastating silence emanating from Lily’s room. And he saw Julian, pale and trembling, gripping a phone that had just delivered a message from his mistress.
“Richard,” Julian stammered, taking another step back. “Richard, please, it’s a misunderstanding. I was just—”
“Hand it to me,” my father said. His voice was terrifyingly calm, barely above a murmur.
Julian’s eyes darted frantically, but the sheer gravity of my father’s presence paralyzed him. My father closed the distance between them, extended his hand, and simply waited. Trembling, Julian placed the phone into my father’s palm.
Richard looked at the illuminated screen. He read the words Vanessa had sent. Then, with a slow, deliberate motion, he dropped the thousand-dollar device onto the linoleum and crushed it under the heel of his Italian leather shoe. The glass shattered with a sickening crunch that echoed down the hallway.
“You are wearing a suit paid for by my company,” my father said softly, stepping into Julian’s personal space. “You are driving a car leased in my name. You sleep in a house that my daughter’s trust fund financed. And you had the audacity to lay in another woman’s bed while my granddaughter fought for her last breath.”
“I didn't know!” Julian choked out, tears of panic spilling down his cheeks. “If I had known Lily was crashing, I swear on my life I would have been here!”
“Your life,” my father replied, his tone absolute zero, “is no longer yours to swear on.”
My father raised his hand in a short, sharp gesture. From the stairwell, two of his personal security contractors emerged—men who looked more like military operatives than bodyguards.
“Escort Mr. Sterling off the premises,” Richard commanded. “He is not to return to the hospital. He is not to return to the estate. If he tries to speak to my daughter again, break his jaw.”
“Sarah!” Julian screamed as the men grabbed him by the arms, dragging him backward toward the elevators. “Sarah, please! She’s my daughter too! You can’t do this!”
I stood completely still. The love I had felt for the man who fathered my child had evaporated, replaced by a void so cold it burned.

“She was my daughter,” I whispered to the empty hallway as the elevator doors closed on him.
My father turned to me. The ruthless titan vanished, replaced by a heartbroken grandfather. He pulled me into his chest, wrapping his heavy overcoat around my shivering shoulders. And for the first time since the heart monitor flatlined, I broke. I screamed into my father’s chest until my vocal cords bled, mourning the little girl I had lost, and the life that had just been burned to ashes.
