Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

At 2:00 AM, the headlights of a muddy SUV cut through the darkness of our suburban street.

The vehicle idled at the curb. The engine cut off.

Through the blinds, I watched Marcus step out of the car. He looked disheveled, manic. He didn't have a key—he had surrendered it to the realtor. But he knew the code to the garage keypad.

I heard the mechanical hum of the garage door opening, followed by the heavy footsteps stomping through the cellar and up the wooden stairs toward the kitchen.

He kicked the kitchen door open, shattering the lock.

"Sarah!" Marcus roared into the dark house. "Where are you?! You think you can steal my birthright? I will end you!"

I stood up slowly from the armchair in the living room, stepping into the moonlight filtering through the windows.

"It was never your birthright, Marcus," I said smoothly. "It was a privilege conditional on you acting like a human being. A test you failed spectacularly."

He spun toward me, his eyes wide and bloodshot. He looked like a feral animal.

"Sign it back!" he screamed, lunging across the room. "Call Vance and tell him it was a mistake, or I swear to God I will bury you in the backyard!"

He reached out to grab my throat.

I didn't flinch. I sidestepped his clumsy, rage-fueled attack. As he stumbled past me, I brought the heavy Maglite flashlight down hard on his collarbone.

A sickening crack echoed in the room.

Marcus screamed, collapsing to his knees, clutching his shoulder.

"You abused my child," I whispered, stepping over him, looking down with absolute disgust. "You left a five-year-old in a freezing basement. You are weak, Marcus. You have always been weak."

He groaned, trying to scramble backward away from me. "Please... Sarah, I'm the father of your children!"

"You are nothing," I corrected.

Suddenly, the front yard erupted in blinding red and blue lights. Sirens wailed, cutting through the silent, snowy night. Detective Ramirez and a SWAT team surrounded the house, having tracked his cell phone signal the moment he entered the city limits.
