Chapter 10 - New Beginnings

Four months later, spring was blooming across Colorado.

The snow had melted, replacing the freezing white nightmare with vibrant greens and blooming wildflowers.

I sat on the back porch of our new home, sipping coffee. Aunt Helen was in the kitchen, baking chocolate chip cookies, her health vastly improved thanks to the world-class oncologists we could now easily afford.

The back door burst open.

Leo ran out into the yard, chasing a golden retriever puppy we had adopted the week before.

He was laughing. It was a loud, joyful, unburdened laugh. The bruises had faded long ago, leaving behind a boy who finally knew he was safe, loved, and protected.

My phone buzzed on the patio table. It was an email from Arthur Vance.

Subject: Sentencing. Good morning, Sarah. The judge handed down the sentence for Marcus this morning. Twenty years in federal prison for the embezzlement, child abuse, and conspiracy charges. No possibility of early parole. Justice has been served.

I read the email, took a deep breath of the crisp spring air, and deleted the message.

Marcus was the past. He was a ghost trapped in a concrete cell, stripped of his wealth, his pride, and his freedom.

I looked out at the yard. Leo fell into the grass, giggling as the puppy licked his face. He looked up at me, his eyes bright and full of absolute trust.

"Look, Mommy!" Leo yelled, pointing at the dog. "He loves me!"

"Of course he does, baby," I smiled, walking down the steps to join them in the sun. "You are family."
