Chapter 5 - The Desperate Call

In the hospital room, my phone buzzed. The caller ID flashed: Marcus.

Detective Ramirez, who was sitting in the corner drinking stale coffee, sat up straight. He tapped his body camera to record the audio and gave me a curt nod.

I answered, keeping my voice perfectly flat. "Hello?"

"Sarah!" Marcus sounded breathless, his usual arrogance replaced by frantic urgency. "Sarah, thank God you answered. Are you on the ship? The base?"

"I'm stateside, Marcus," I said coolly. "What's wrong? You sound stressed."

"My cards aren't working!" he panicked. "I'm in Vail with the twins. There’s some kind of bank error. Did you do something to the joint accounts? Did you forget to authorize the international travel?"

"I didn't touch the joint accounts, Marcus," I said. "Though it's funny you mention them, considering you drained every last cent before you left."

There was a dead silence on the line.

"Sarah..." Marcus stammered. "What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about the freezing cellar," I said, my voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "I'm talking about the bruised collarbone on my son. I'm talking about the granola bar you left him to survive on while you took a private jet to Colorado."

"Sarah, listen to me, it's a misunderstanding!" The lie was desperate, pathetic. "He locked himself down there! I thought he was at a friend's house! Helen was supposed to watch him!"

"Helen betrayed you, Marcus," I said. "She left me the folder. The offshore accounts. The recordings. And the trust clause."

I heard a sharp intake of breath over the line. "You didn't..."

"Arthur Vance executed the transfer at 8:05 this morning," I confirmed. "You own nothing, Marcus. The houses, the money, the businesses. They belong to me and Leo now. Oh, and your cousin David? He’s currently in a jail cell with a broken nose."

"You b***h!" Marcus screamed, his mask completely shattering. "You can't do this to me! I am a Sterling! That is my money!"

"Not anymore," I said. "Run, Marcus. Because the FBI is already looking for you."

I hung up the phone and blocked his number.
