Chapter 7 - The Police Raid

On Wednesday morning at exactly 7:30 AM, the serene, affluent silence of the Mercer estate suburb was permanently shattered. While my father was sitting at his breakfast table reading the Wall Street Journal and my mother was sipping espresso in her silk robe, four marked police cruisers and two unmarked black sedans pulled into their long circular driveway.
I wasn't there to witness it in person—the protective order Marcus Sterling had secured prohibited me from being on the premises—but I didn't need to be. Marcus had sent an associate from his firm to stand on the public sidewalk across the street, capturing the entire sequence of events on a long-lens camera to ensure my father couldn't claim police brutality or procedural error later.
At 7:35 AM, two uniformed officers and two plainclothes detectives from the Major Crimes Division walked up the stone steps of the Tudor mansion and rang the brass doorbell. My father answered the door himself, wearing his custom-tailored morning suit, expecting perhaps a delivery courier or a neighborhood contractor.
When the lead detective presented the arrest warrant signed by a Superior Court judge, my father’s arrogance instantly flared into rage. On the video feed Marcus’s associate streamed to my tablet, I watched my father point his finger in the detective’s face, shouting so loudly that the audio picked up across the street: “Do you know who I am?! I am Richard Mercer! I play golf with the Chief of Police! You cannot come onto my property with this garbage!”
The detective didn't argue. He simply stepped forward, grabbed my father’s outstretched right wrist, spun him around against the carved oak doorframe, and snapped a pair of heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

My mother came running out onto the front porch, screaming hysterically, her silk robe flapping in the morning breeze as she tried to physically push the second arresting officer away from her husband. “Get your hands off him! She’s lying! My daughter is a mentally ill liar! Call our lawyer, Richard! Call Harrison right now!”
Behind her, Chloe appeared in the doorway, clutching her smartphone, her face pale with absolute terror as she watched the invincible patriarch of our family being perp-walked down the stone steps in his slippers. As they shoved my father into the back of the caged police cruiser and read him his Miranda rights, Chloe looked straight toward the street camera, realizing for the very first time that her protective shield of family privilege had just been crushed into dust.
