Chapter 15 - Chloe’s Betrayal

If there is one absolute, universal law among covert narcissists and entitled golden children, it is that loyalty only exists as long as the money is flowing and the applause is loud. The moment the ship begins to sink and prison sentences become a mathematical reality, the rats don't just abandon the vessel—they actively turn on each other to save their own skins.

Two days after the viral exposure destroyed their social standing, Chloe Mercer walked into the downtown federal building, accompanied by a public defender she had hired using the remaining balance of her checking account. Without telling our mother, without consulting our father’s defense attorney, Chloe had decided to execute the ultimate betrayal: offering to turn State's evidence against her own parents in exchange for immunity from federal prosecution.

I was sitting in the conference room of the U.S. Attorney’s Office alongside Assistant District Attorney Evelyn Vance and a senior FBI financial crimes agent when Chloe’s proffer agreement was brought to the table.

“She’s offering complete cooperation,” the FBI agent explained, sliding a typed transcript of Chloe’s preliminary interview across the desk toward me. “She is willing to testify under oath that Richard and Eleanor actively instructed her to sign fraudulent closing documents on the Manhattan condo, that they knowingly used embezzled trust funds to pay her personal credit card bills, and that Richard explicitly told her on the afternoon of your rehearsal dinner to wear a white wedding gown to provoke an emotional confrontation with you and Alex.”

I read through the transcript, my eyes catching on page four where the interrogator asked Chloe why she had participated in the rehearsal dinner ambush.

“Daddy told me that if we could get Victoria to throw a temper tantrum or cancel the wedding, the trust fund money would stay under his control for another five years until she turned thirty,” Chloe’s recorded answer read. “He said that if Alex dumped her, we could convince her she was mentally unstable and get her to sign over her beneficial rights to the estate to pay for 'medical treatment.' He promised me that if I helped him break them up, he would buy me the summer cottage in the Hamptons I wanted.”

“They were trying to stage a psychological breakdown to strip me of my legal rights,” I whispered, looking up at Alex, who was gripping the edge of the table with white knuckles. “The decanter throw wasn't just drunken rage. It was the culmination of a calculated plot to destroy my life so they could keep my grandfather’s money.”

“And thanks to your sister’s self-serving confession, that plot is now officially a federal conspiracy charge,” ADA Vance said grimly. “We are superseding your father’s state assault indictment with a federal twenty-count racketeering, wire fraud, and money laundering indictment. And as for your mother... the FBI is serving her arrest warrant at her country club residence this afternoon.”
