Chapter 2 - The Digital Witness

Twenty minutes after the doctor finished placing nine neat sutures above my cheekbone, Alex’s smartphone vibrated in his jacket pocket. He pulled it out, his screen illuminating the dim recovery cubicle. A text message had arrived from an unknown number, containing no words—only an encrypted video file attachment and a brief follow-up sentence: I couldn't stand there and let them lie about what happened tonight. Please protect her.
“Who sent that?” I asked, leaning against the elevated pillows as the local anesthetic numbed the throbbing pain in my face.
“I don't know yet. A disposable burner number or a secure routing app,” Alex muttered, tapping the screen to download the file. “Let’s see what our anonymous Samaritan captured.”
He pressed play, holding the screen between us. The high-definition video opened on the manicured backyard of my parents’ estate, bathed in the soft amber glow of hanging bistro lights. The audio was crystal clear. It captured my younger sister, Chloe, standing by the champagne fountain in the elaborate, floor-length white wedding gown she had secretly purchased to upstage my rehearsal dinner. It captured my father, Richard Vance, red-faced and screaming at Alex, demanding to know why a man of Alex’s social standing would settle for "the cold, ungrateful daughter" when Chloe was practically throwing herself at him.
Then came the moment of impact. The camera angle shifted slightly, panning toward the outdoor bar just as my father grabbed the heavy, lead-crystal bourbon decanter. There was no hesitation, no stumble of drunkenness—just a calculated, vicious wind-up as he hurled the heavy glass directly at my head from six feet away.
On the video, the sound of the crystal shattering against my cheekbone was a sickening, sharp crack, followed instantly by the chorus of gasps from the eight rehearsal guests frozen on the lawn. But the most damning element wasn't the throw itself; it was the audio that followed as I collapsed onto the flagstones. My mother, Eleanor, stepped into the frame, looking down at my bleeding face with a cold, triumphant smirk.
“Let’s see if he still wants to show you off now,” her voice sneered on the recording, crystal clear above the ambient wind.

Alex paused the video, his breathing shallow and ragged as he stared at the frozen image of my mother’s cruel smile. “They didn't just assault you, Tori. They reveled in it. They wanted to destroy your dignity.”
“Save that file to your secure encrypted cloud immediately,” I instructed, my analytical mind taking complete control over my physical shock. “Send a backup copy to my work server and a third to your firm’s primary storage. My father has enough influence in this town to try and bribe local witnesses, but he can't bribe a timestamped, cloud-secured digital recording.”
