Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail

We needed a silver bullet. The video of the assault would put Greg away for a few years, but it wouldn't stop the Vegas syndicate, and it wouldn't stop Sterling from dragging my mother's mental health through the mud in a civil suit to steal the land.
"Mom," I said gently, pouring her a cup of tea. "Is there anything at the Tahoe house? Anything Greg might have missed?"
Mom frowned, tapping her chin. "Your father had a wall safe behind the bookshelf in his study. I never opened it after he passed. Only he knew the combination, but... he always used the date we met."
I immediately called Marcus. "Get a federal warrant for the Tahoe property. We are going in. I want a forensic team."
But before Marcus could secure the warrant, my phone rang. It was the local Tahoe sheriff.
"Prosecutor Davis," the sheriff said, sounding panicked. "We have a situation at your mother's estate. Your brother-in-law, Greg Vance, just bypassed the police tape. He's inside the house, and he's armed."

"I'm an hour away by helicopter," I said. "Lock down the perimeter. Do not let him leave with any documents!"
