Chapter 3 - Following the Money

Two days passed. The media had caught wind of the scandal. Federal Prosecutor’s Mother Brutally Attacked Over Multi-Million Dollar Estate. The press was camped outside my building.

Marcus arrived at my apartment just after midnight, carrying a thick manila folder. He looked exhausted.

"You're not going to believe this," Marcus said, spreading the documents across my dining table. "Greg isn't just a deadbeat son-in-law. He’s a shell company director for a real estate syndicate out of Vegas. They buy up prime, waterfront property, bulldoze the historic homes, and build luxury resorts."

"And Mom's Tahoe property?" I asked, tracing the lines of a massive wire transfer on the paper.

"It's the missing puzzle piece," Marcus explained. "The syndicate already bought the four properties surrounding your mother's. Hers is the centerpiece. If they don't get her five acres, the whole billion-dollar resort project collapses. Greg was planted. He married Claire to get to your mother's land."

A wave of nausea washed over me. "Did Claire know?"

Marcus slid a photograph across the table. It was a surveillance shot from a Vegas casino, dated three years ago. It showed Greg and Claire sitting at a VIP table, laughing and drinking champagne with the head of the real estate syndicate.

"She didn't just know," Marcus said grimly. "She helped plan it."
