Chapter 7 - The Governor's Ball

Despite her crumbling world, Beatrice Kensington refused to surrender.
She believed that if she could just make one strong public appearance, she could regain her leverage.
The annual Governor's Charity Ball was the most exclusive event of the year.
Beatrice put on her most expensive diamond necklace and her finest silk gown.
She intended to walk into that ballroom and remind the political elite who she was.
She arrived in a chauffeured limousine, lifting her chin proudly as she stepped onto the red carpet.
The photographers hesitated, unsure if they should take her picture.
She ignored them and marched into the grand foyer of the state capitol building.
The ballroom was filled with governors, senators, and wealthy socialites.
When Beatrice entered, a heavy, uncomfortable silence fell over the room.
People actively turned their backs to her, refusing to make eye contact.
She forced a smile and walked toward the Governor, intending to demand his help.
Before she could reach him, the massive oak doors of the ballroom swung open.
I walked in.
I was wearing my immaculate Service Dress White uniform, my medals shining brilliantly under the chandeliers.
I was not alone.
Flanking me were six federal prosecutors and a dozen FBI agents wearing tactical vests over their suits.
The music abruptly stopped.
Beatrice froze in her tracks, her face draining of all color.
I walked straight past the terrified politicians and stopped directly in front of her.
"Captain Rostov," Beatrice whispered, her voice finally breaking.
"You can't do this here."
"I can do this wherever I please," I replied, my voice echoing through the silent room.
I stepped aside, allowing the lead FBI agent to step forward.
"Beatrice Kensington, you are under arrest for racketeering, bribery, and extortion," the agent announced.
He grabbed her arms, forcing them behind her back.
The cold steel of the handcuffs clicked loudly over her expensive silk sleeves.
The entire room watched in stunned silence as the untouchable matriarch was publicly humiliated.
"This is illegal!" Beatrice shrieked, struggling against the agents.
"I will sue all of you!"
I leaned in close to her ear, lowering my voice so only she could hear.
"I told you," I whispered.
"Your shiny diamonds do not frighten me."
May you like
The agents marched her out of the ballroom, parading her past the flashing cameras of the press.
The reign of the Kensingtons was officially over.
