Chapter 2 - The Medical Record

Despite Thomas’s apologies, Jade knew that an apology would not protect them from a woman as vindictive as Carol.
"We need to take her to the emergency room right now," Jade stated firmly, standing up with Zoey in her arms.
Thomas blinked in surprise, glancing at the clock on the wall.
"The bleeding has stopped, and it looks like just a bruise, honey."
"It is not about the treatment, Thomas," Jade explained, grabbing her purse and the diaper bag from the counter.
"It is about documentation, because your mother will spin this story to make us look like the abusers."
Thomas’s eyes widened as he realized the tactical brilliance and the grim necessity of his wife’s plan.
He grabbed his car keys without another word, nodding in total agreement.
The drive to the local pediatric hospital was silent, thick with the heavy realization that their family dynamic was permanently shattered.
Inside the brightly lit examination room, a sympathetic pediatrician carefully inspected the handprint on Zoey’s small face.
The doctor’s expression hardened as she measured the welt and took high-resolution photographs for the medical file.
"I have to inform you that by law, I am a mandated reporter," the doctor said gently but firmly.
"I will be notifying Child Protective Services and the local police department about this incident."
Thomas swallowed hard, but he sat up straight and looked the doctor in the eye.
"Please do whatever is necessary to ensure my mother cannot come near my daughter ever again."
The doctor nodded, clearly relieved that the parents were protective and not making excuses for the abuser.
While Thomas filled out the police report in the hallway, Jade rocked Zoey to sleep.
She looked down at her daughter’s innocent face, vowing silently that Carol would pay for every single tear.

This was no longer just a family dispute; it was a legal battle, and Jade was fully prepared to go to war.
When they finally returned home, the house felt safer, but the blinking light on their answering machine signaled incoming trouble.
