Chapter 1 - The Line Drawn in Sand

The heavy oak door stood wide open, letting in a chilling autumn breeze that swept through the tense living room.
Carol stared at her son, her mouth hanging open in utter disbelief as the reality of his words hit her.
"You cannot be serious, Thomas," she scoffed, her voice trembling with misplaced indignation as she adjusted her designer cardigan.
"I am the matriarch of this family, and you are throwing me out over a simple lesson in discipline?"
Thomas did not flinch, his eyes burning with a cold, unfamiliar fury that made Carol take a small step back.
"Hitting a two-year-old child is not discipline, Mother," Thomas said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, quiet register.
He pointed a steady finger toward the porch, his jaw locked so tight a muscle ticked beneath his skin.
"Pack your bags right now, or I will personally throw them onto the driveway."
Jade held Zoey tighter against her chest, her heart pounding as she watched her husband defend their family.
Zoey buried her tear-stained face into Jade’s neck, her tiny hands gripping her mother’s shirt as she whimpered softly.
The red welt on the toddler’s cheek was a glaring, agonizing testament to Carol’s cruelty.
"This is all your fault," Carol spat, glaring at Jade with venomous hatred.
"You poisoned my son against his own blood, all because you don't know how to raise a child with proper respect."
Thomas stepped forward, cutting off his mother’s line of sight to his wife and daughter.
"Say one more word to her, and I won't just kick you out, I will call the police and press assault charges."
Carol gasped, her hand flying to her chest as if she had been physically struck by his threat.
Realizing she had finally crossed a line she could not uncross, Carol spun around and stomped toward the guest room.
Ten minutes later, the front door slammed shut behind her, echoing like a gunshot through the sudden silence of the house.
Thomas let out a shaky breath, running his hands over his face before turning to his wife.
He dropped to his knees in front of Jade and Zoey, gently touching his daughter’s uninjured cheek with trembling fingers.
"I am so sorry I wasn't here to stop her, Jade," he whispered, his eyes shining with unshed tears.

Jade shook her head, leaning forward to rest her forehead against his.
"You are here now, Thomas, and that is what matters most."
