Chapter 6 - Severing the Lifeline

Within forty-eight hours, the Vance estate was transformed. The suffocating aroma of Beatrice’s heavy perfumes was aired out, replaced by the clean, fresh scent of coastal wind and Elena’s favorite lavender candles. A professional cleaning crew had scrubbed the kitchen down to the bare stone, eliminating every trace of the chaotic mess from that fateful Friday night.
But outside the sanctuary of the estate, the shockwaves of Julian’s financial severance were ripping through Seattle's high society.
On Tuesday afternoon, Julian sat in his corner office at Vance Enterprises, reviewing deployment metrics when his direct line buzzed. It was his executive assistant.
"Mr. Vance, I apologize for the interruption, but the manager at the Nordstrom designer boutique downtown is on line two. He says your sister Clara is attempting to charge fourteen hundred dollars in merchandise to your corporate account and is causing a scene in the store."
Julian leaned back in his leather chair, staring out at the rain-slicked city skyline. "Connect him."
A moment later, a flustered retail manager’s voice came over the speaker. "Mr. Vance! I am so sorry to bother you, but Ms. Vance is insisting that her card decline is a technical error on our end. She is demanding we force the transaction through."
"It is not an error," Julian said clearly and audibly, knowing Clara was likely leaning over the counter trying to listen. "That account has been permanently closed. Ms. Vance is not authorized to make purchases in my name, nor does she represent me or my company in any capacity. If she cannot pay for the items with her own funds, please return them to the rack and ask her to leave."
In the background, Julian could hear Clara’s faint, hysterical scream: "Give me that phone! Julian, you ruin everything! How am I supposed to attend the gala tonight without a gown?!"

Julian calmly pressed the disconnect button. He opened his spreadsheet, located the line item labeled Family Expenditures - Discretionary, which had drained over two hundred thousand dollars from his income the previous year alone, and highlighted the entire row.
With a single tap of his keyboard, he deleted it. He reallocated the exact sum into a newly established, high-yield educational trust fund titled: The Lucas Vance Legacy Trust—named after the son Elena would give birth to in just two months.
