Chapter 4 - A Sanctuary Restored

The penthouse suite at the Fairmont hotel was bathed in soft, warm amber light, overlooking the glittering skyline of downtown Seattle. The sound of the rain against the glass here felt soothing, distant—a barrier keeping the chaos of the world outside rather than trapping it within.
Elena sat on the edge of the king-sized bed, wearing a thick, dry bathrobe the hotel staff had brought up. A tray of hot tea and a bowl of rich, warm soup sat untouched on the bedside table. Julian knelt on the carpet in front of her, carefully applying a soothing herbal salve to the red, raw skin of her hands before wrapping them in soft gauze.
"How long, Elena?" Julian asked quietly, looking up into her tired face. "Tell me the truth. How long have they been treating you like this?"
Elena let out a shaky breath, a fresh tear escaping her eye and rolling down her cheek. "Since the day after we got back from our honeymoon," she whispered. "At first, it was just little things. Asking me to make their coffee. Leaving their laundry in the hallway. But when you started taking on the new server deployments... when you started coming home after midnight..."
She paused, swallowing hard. "Your mother told me that because I didn't bring a trust fund or a corporate title to the marriage, my only value to the Vance family was domestic service. She said if I complained to you, you would resent me for adding stress to your work life. She told me... she told me that high-powered men like you eventually replace wives who become burdens."
Julian’s chest tightened with a physical ache so profound it robbed him of breath. He rested his forehead gently against her knees, closing his eyes as the weight of his own blindness washed over him. He had been so obsessed with building a fortress of financial security that he hadn't noticed the vipers breeding inside the courtyard.
"I am so sorry," Julian choked out, his voice breaking for the first time that night. "I was a coward. I mistook financial provision for protection. I left you alone on the front lines while I hid behind my monitors."
May you like
Elena reached out with her bandaged hand, weaving her fingers gently into his dark hair. "You didn't know, Julian. They were so careful. The moment your car pulled into the driveway, Clara would put away the cleaning supplies and Beatrice would turn on the charm."
Julian lifted his head, looking directly into her eyes with renewed, unshakable resolve. "They will never be within a hundred yards of you or our son ever again. That is not a promise made out of anger. That is a permanent, legal reality. From this moment on, my only duty, my only loyalty, and my only home is right here. With you."
