Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Slaughter

The day of reckoning arrived in a glass-walled boardroom on the fiftieth floor of the Sterling Tower.
Julian sat at the end of the long mahogany table, looking ten years older. He hadn't slept in days. The SEC was freezing his personal accounts. Chloe had packed her bags and fled the penthouse after the parking garage video was leaked to the press, trying to save herself by cooperating with the authorities.
The board members sat in grim silence. Richard Sterling cleared his throat.
“Julian,” Richard began, his tone lacking any familial warmth. “The situation is untenable. The stock is in freefall. The SEC is preparing to indict. We have no choice but to permanently remove you as CEO and sever all ties to protect the company.”
“You can’t do that,” Julian argued, though his voice lacked its usual bite. “I hold 40% of the voting shares. You don't have the majority to push me out.”
“Actually, he does.”
The boardroom doors swung open. Elena walked in, wearing a sharp, tailored white suit, flanked by Arthur Vance.
Julian stood up, slamming his hands on the table. “You have no business being here! This is a closed meeting!”
“She has every right to be here,” Arthur corrected, handing a legal document to Richard. “Pursuant to the Sterling Trust, Section 4, Paragraph B. Because Julian Sterling has been deemed unfit for fiduciary duty, and because he successfully sired a male heir before his thirty-fifth birthday, the escrowed 20% voting shares have been released.”
Arthur paused for dramatic effect. “And as the sole legal guardian of Leo Vance-Sterling, Ms. Elena Vance holds the proxy for those shares until the child turns twenty-one. Combined with the board’s 40%, she holds the absolute majority.”
Julian felt the air leave his lungs. He looked at the faces of the board members. They weren't looking at him with pity. They were looking at Elena with respect. She had outplayed him at his own game.
“I motion for a vote,” Elena said calmly, taking a seat at the opposite end of the table, directly across from Julian. “To permanently remove Julian Sterling from his position as CEO, and strip him of all executive privileges.”
“All in favor?” Richard asked.
Every single hand in the room went up.
Julian stood alone in the silence. The empire he had sacrificed his marriage, his morals, and his child for was gone.

“You took my company,” Julian whispered, staring at Elena with hollow eyes.
“I didn't take it,” Elena replied, her voice steady and resolute. “I secured it for my son. You’re dismissed, Julian.”
