Chapter 1 - The Altar Abandoned

The silence on the line was profound, heavy enough to crush diamonds. For three agonizing seconds, the ambient noise of St. Patrick’s Cathedral—the string quartet, the murmur of the elite, the rustling of expensive silk—seemed to be sucked into a vacuum.
“Maternity ward?” Julian’s voice cracked, a rare fracture in his polished, billion-dollar veneer. The smugness had evaporated, replaced by a chilling, breathless dread. “Elena, what kind of sick game are you playing?”
“I don’t play games, Julian. You took everything else in the divorce. I simply kept what was mine.”
Before he could demand an explanation, before he could scream or threaten her with his army of corporate lawyers, Elena tapped the red button on the screen. The call disconnected. She tossed the phone onto the sterile white blankets and looked down at the tiny, breathing weight against her chest. Her son. Her blood.
Miles away, on the sweeping marble steps of the cathedral, Julian Sterling lowered his phone. His face, usually a mask of arrogant perfection, had drained of all color. He stared blankly at the towering oak doors of the church. Inside, Chloe Mercer was waiting in a custom Vera Wang gown that cost more than a suburban home, surrounded by five hundred of New York’s most influential people.
Julian’s mind raced, calculating, reeling. Infertile. That was the word his doctors had used. That was the narrative he and Chloe had spun to push Elena out with minimum alimony. But if Elena had just given birth…
“Julian?” His best man, a hedge fund manager named Pierce, stepped out into the biting cold, shivering in his tuxedo. “They’re cueing the bride. You need to be at the altar.”
“I have to go,” Julian whispered.
“Go? Go where? Julian, the mayor is in the second row!”
Julian didn't answer. He turned and sprinted down the steps, ignoring the shouts of the paparazzi and the frantic calls of his groomsmen. He threw himself into the back of his waiting Maybach, screaming at the driver, “Mount Sinai! Now! Run every red light if you have to!”
As the tires squealed against the icy pavement, Julian’s chest heaved. He didn't know if he was furious or terrified. If it was a lie, he would destroy her. But if it was the truth…
Forty minutes later, the doors to the VIP maternity wing flew open. Julian, his bespoke tuxedo jacket discarded, his bowtie undone, stormed past the nurses' station.
“Sir, you can’t—” a nurse started.
He ignored her, scanning the room numbers until he found 412. He shoved the door open.
The room was quiet, save for the rhythmic beeping of a heart monitor. Elena was sitting up in bed, cradling a small bundle in a soft gray swaddle. Sitting in the corner chair was Elena’s older sister, Clara, who stood up immediately, her eyes flashing with protective rage.
Julian stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes locked onto the bundle.
Elena didn't shrink back. She didn't cry. She looked at the man who had broken her heart, ruined her reputation, and abandoned her, and felt absolutely nothing but a cold, hard clarity.
Julian took a slow, shaking step forward. He looked down.
The baby had a shock of dark hair, exactly like Julian’s. But it was the jawline, the subtle slope of the nose, that sent a shockwave through Julian’s core. It was a mirror image. It was a Sterling.

“You… you hid this from me,” Julian breathed, his voice trembling with a mixture of awe and rising fury. “You kept my child a secret.”
“He is not your child,” Elena said, her voice smooth and hard as glass. “He is mine. Now, shouldn't you be at a wedding?”
