Chapter 6 - The Gala of Ruin

Two weeks later, the Sterling Foundation held its annual Winter Gala. It was the most important social event of the season, a critical night for Julian to reassure his investors and the board of directors that the company was stable, despite the media circus.
Julian and Chloe arrived looking like the perfect power couple. Chloe wore a backless red gown, clinging to Julian’s arm, flashing a blinding smile to the cameras. They spent the first hour schmoozing with board members, downplaying the lawsuit as a "temporary family dispute."
“She’s grasping at straws,” Julian smoothly told Richard Sterling, his uncle and the chairman of the board. “The embezzlement claims are completely fabricated. A desperate attempt from a bitter woman.”
Richard frowned, sipping his martini. “I hope so, Julian. Because if there is even a shred of truth to it, the board will not hesitate to remove you to protect the stock price.”
Suddenly, the ambient chatter in the grand ballroom died down. The string quartet missed a note. Heads turned toward the grand staircase.
Julian followed their gaze, and the blood drained from his face.
Elena was standing at the top of the stairs. She wasn't wearing the conservative, understated dresses Julian used to pick out for her. She was wearing a stunning, floor-length midnight blue gown that fit her post-pregnancy body perfectly. Her hair was swept back, her makeup sharp and fierce. She looked like a queen.
Beside her stood Arthur Vance, holding a sleek leather briefcase.
Elena descended the stairs. The crowd parted for her like the Red Sea. She didn't look at the floor. She didn't shrink under their stares. She walked with a terrifying, absolute confidence directly toward Julian and Chloe.
“Elena,” Julian hissed under his breath as she approached. “You are not on the guest list. Security will escort you out.”
“I don't need an invitation to an event funded by my son’s future assets,” Elena replied, her voice carrying just enough for the surrounding board members to hear.
Chloe stepped forward, her eyes narrowing. “You have a lot of nerve showing your face here, Elena. You're making a fool of yourself.”
Elena turned her gaze to Chloe. It was the look of a lioness looking at a mouse. “Chloe. I see you’re still wearing dresses paid for by the children’s hospital charity fund. Red is a bold choice for a thief.”
The surrounding guests gasped. Richard Sterling stepped forward. “Elena, what is the meaning of this?”
Arthur opened his briefcase and pulled out a stack of pristine, spiral-bound folders. “Mr. Chairman,” Arthur said respectfully, handing a folder to Richard. “Copies of the offshore wire transfers. IP addresses matching Mr. Sterling’s private office and Ms. Mercer’s personal laptop. Over fourteen million dollars diverted from the charity over the last three years.”
Julian lunged forward. “That’s a forgery! You’re lying!”
“The SEC doesn't think so,” Elena said softly, her eyes locked on Julian’s panicking face. “I forwarded the files to them this morning. They are opening a formal investigation tomorrow.”
The ballroom descended into absolute pandemonium. Board members began frantically flipping through the folders. Investors backed away from Julian as if he were radioactive.

Chloe grabbed Julian’s arm, her perfectly manicured facade cracking. “Julian, do something!”
But Julian could do nothing. He stood paralyzed in the center of the ballroom, watching the empire he had stolen from his wife crumble into dust beneath her stilettos.
