Chapter 8 - The Fracture

Nathan slammed the heavy trunk of his SUV shut, the vehicle groaning under the immense weight of their poorly packed garbage bags.

They stood together on the public sidewalk, watching in horrified silence as the demolition crew immediately began breaking down the beautiful front porch.

The heavy, destructive crunch of wood and tearing metal echoed loudly through the quiet, upscale neighborhood.

Neighbors they had previously bragged to were now standing on their immaculate lawns, openly staring and whispering about the humiliating spectacle.

"Get in the car, Elena," Nathan muttered, keeping his head down to avoid the burning, judgmental stares of the wealthy neighbors.

"Get in the car and go exactly where, Nathan?" Elena snapped, her voice dripping with pure, unadulterated venom.

"We don't have a house, we don't have money, and your credit cards are entirely maxed out!"

Nathan spun around, his face turning an angry, violent shade of red as his temper flared once again.

"This is just a temporary setback, Elena, I will fix this!" he yelled, desperately trying to salvage his shattered ego.

"A temporary setback?!" Elena laughed loudly, a cruel, mocking sound that cut straight through the cold morning air.

"You hit your rich, elderly mother in the face for absolutely no reason, and she nuked our entire lives in less than eight hours!"

She stepped closer to him, entirely unafraid of his anger now that he had absolutely nothing left to offer her.

"You are a broke, pathetic loser, Nathan, and I am absolutely done pretending that you are a competent man."

Nathan looked absolutely gutted, his eyes wide with shock as the woman he had ruined his own mother for completely discarded him.

"Elena, please, don't do this right now," Nathan begged pathetically, his voice finally breaking with genuine emotion.

"I am ordering an Uber to the airport, and my father is buying me a first-class ticket back to Chicago," she stated coldly, pulling her designer suitcase away from his vehicle.

"I am filing for absolute, immediate divorce the second I land."

She turned her back on him completely, rolling her expensive luggage down the sidewalk without ever looking back.

Nathan stood there entirely alone, completely isolated, watching his wife abandon him while a bulldozer violently ripped the roof off the only home he had ever known.

I closed the camera app on my tablet, completely satisfied with the total, flawless destruction of his miserable world.

There was absolutely nothing left to watch.
