Chapter 6 - The Desperate Scramble

The sun began to set, casting long, dark, depressing shadows across the empty living room floor.

I was currently boarding my luxurious first-class flight, settling into my spacious pod with a glass of complimentary vintage champagne.

I connected to the airplane's premium Wi-Fi specifically so I wouldn't miss a single second of the tragic comedy unfolding in my former home.

Nathan had spent the last two hours frantically calling every single lawyer in the tri-state area.

I watched him pace back and forth across the bare kitchen tiles, his phone pressed desperately to his ear.

"Yes, but I have established residency! I receive my mail here!" Nathan pleaded with some exhausted, late-night legal associate.

He paused, listening to the crushing legal reality being explained to him over the phone.

"What do you mean I have no rights? She is my mother, she can't just evict me without a formal thirty-day notice!"

There was another long pause, and Nathan’s shoulders slumped in absolute, total defeat.

"The new corporate owner isn't a landlord... they are a demolition company," Nathan repeated, his voice barely a whisper.

He slowly lowered the phone, ending the call as the final nail was driven firmly into his coffin.

Because the house was sold to a corporate entity for immediate commercial demolition, standard residential squatter protections were completely null and void.

Elena was furiously throwing her expensive clothes into garbage bags in the master bedroom, screaming profanities that echoed through the empty house.

"Call your rich friends, call your stupid fraternity brothers, do something!" Elena ordered him, storming into the kitchen.

"Nobody wants to take us in, Elena," Nathan snapped back, his frustration finally boiling over into pure rage.

"We owe everyone money! Mark blocked my number, and Dave laughed in my face when I asked to crash on his couch!"

They were completely, utterly isolated, trapped in a disastrous situation entirely of their own making.

They had treated my home like a free luxury hotel while treating me like unwanted trash, and now the bill had finally come due.

"I am not sleeping on the floor of a homeless shelter, Nathan!" Elena shrieked, pointing a sharp, manicured finger directly at his chest.

"You better figure this out right now, or I am calling my mother and flying back to Chicago tonight!"

May you like

Nathan stared at his furious wife, realizing for the first time that her love was entirely conditional on the luxury he could fraudulently provide.

I took a slow, deeply satisfying sip of my champagne as the airplane smoothly took off into the dark night sky.
