Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

I stood on the expansive, glass-enclosed balcony of my brand-new Seattle penthouse, holding a steaming mug of expensive, imported tea.
The glittering, magnificent skyline of the city stretched out before me, reflecting beautifully on the dark waters of the massive bay.
My new home was completely decorated exactly to my own personal taste, filled with elegant, classic furniture and vibrant, beautiful art.
My late husband’s beloved antique writing desk sat perfectly in the corner of my spacious, quiet study, completely safe from anyone's "modern aesthetic" complaints.
There were no obnoxious security cameras monitoring my every single move, and absolutely nobody was stealing my favorite magazine subscriptions.
I had joined an exclusive, upscale book club, made wonderful new friends, and even started taking private, expensive painting lessons.
At seventy years old, I finally felt completely alive, entirely unburdened, and fiercely, beautifully independent.
My phone rang softly from the kitchen island, a gentle, pleasant chime that didn't fill me with sudden dread.
It was Marcus, my incredibly efficient real estate broker, calling just to check in on my transition.
"Margaret, I just wanted to make sure you were completely settled in and happy with the new luxury penthouse," Marcus said warmly.
"It is absolutely perfect, Marcus, I have never been happier in my entire life," I replied honestly, smiling out at the city lights.
"I drove past the old property yesterday," Marcus added casually, lowering his voice slightly.
"The corporate developers completely leveled the lot; there is absolutely nothing left but a giant, flat square of dirt."
I took a slow, deep breath, feeling a profound, immense sense of total closure wash entirely over me.
"Good," I answered softly, meaning every single syllable of the word.
"Some things are deeply corrupted and simply need to be completely torn down so you can build something beautiful in its place."
I thanked Marcus for his excellent service, ended the call, and walked back out onto the beautiful balcony.
I had endured the ultimate betrayal from my own flesh and blood, but I refused to let that darkness define the remainder of my life.

I raised my mug of hot tea toward the glowing city skyline, offering a silent, triumphant toast to my own quiet, devastating strength.
The trap had worked perfectly, the past was completely erased, and the rest of my brilliant, luxurious life was entirely mine.
