Chapter 7 - The Abandoned Clinic

We burst through a rusted metal door, locking it heavily behind us.

The door shuddered instantly as the thugs slammed their weight against it from the other side.

"This way!" David yelled, leading us up a dark, narrow staircase.

We climbed blindly, my lungs burning with every breath.

We finally reached the top, pushing open a heavy wooden door that led into a dusty, abandoned building.

Moonlight filtered through boarded-up windows, revealing rows of old hospital beds.

"This was the old tuberculosis ward," David panted, leaning against a rotting wall.

"It has been closed for decades, no one ever comes up here."

I collapsed onto a dusty mattress, my body trembling with exhaustion and terror.

The contractions had slowed down, the medication finally starting to fight off the induced labor.

"We need a phone," Dr. Reed said, pacing the floorboards.

"We have to call the FBI; local police will be too risky, Aaron has too much money."

"My phone is dead," David said, patting his pockets frantically.

"I left my bag in the lab during the breach."

Dr. Reed cursed under her breath, pulling her own phone from her pocket.

"No signal in here, the thick concrete walls block everything."

She looked at me, her face pale in the moonlight.

"I need to go closer to the street to get a signal and make the call."

"No, please do not leave me," I begged, terrified of being alone in the dark.

"I will be right back, Anna, I promise," she said, squeezing my hand tightly.

"David is going to stay right here and protect you."

She slipped out the door, her footsteps fading down the hallway.

I lay in the silence, listening to David’s heavy breathing in the corner.

Ten minutes passed like an eternity.

Suddenly, the wooden door creaked open slowly.

I held my breath, waiting to see Dr. Reed’s face emerge from the shadows.

Instead, the moonlight caught the glimmer of a silver cup.

Sylvia stepped into the room, her pearl earrings catching the faint light.

"Hello, Anna," my mother-in-law said, her voice dripping with sickening sweetness.

Behind her stood Aaron, his suit perfectly clean, holding a syringe filled with clear liquid.

David tried to lunge forward, but Aaron pulled a heavy pistol from his coat and struck David across the temple.

David crumpled to the floor, unconscious.

"You really made this difficult, darling," Aaron sighed, stepping toward me.
