Chapter 10 - The Aftermath

Two months later, the morning sun poured through the windows of my parents' living room.
I sat on the comfortable rocking chair, holding my healthy, beautiful newborn son in my arms.
He had arrived exactly on his due date, free of any synthetic chemicals or forced inductions.
Dr. Reed, now just Natalie to me, sat on the couch sipping a cup of normal, store-bought tea.
"The trial dates have been set," Natalie said softly, placing her mug on the coaster.
"The federal prosecutors are confident they will get life sentences for both of them."
"They found the private lab Sylvia was funding, and all the illegal genetics research."
I nodded, kissing the top of my son's soft head.
"Good," I whispered, feeling a profound sense of peace.
"They will never be able to hurt another woman or child again."
Aaron had tried to plead insanity, but the meticulous notes he kept on my 'progress' proved premeditation.
He was a monster operating behind a medical license, and the world finally saw him for what he was.
Sylvia remained silent during her interrogations, maintaining her twisted belief that she was advancing human evolution.
They were both locked in federal holding cells, a far cry from their pristine, controlled mansions.
My son shifted in his sleep, his tiny fingers wrapping tightly around my thumb.
I looked at the small, fading scar on my abdomen where the port used to be.
It was a reminder of the nightmare I had endured, but also a symbol of my strength.
I had broken the lock they placed on my life.
"Are you ready for your checkup, mama?" Natalie smiled, pulling her stethoscope from her bag.
"I am ready," I smiled back, adjusting the blanket around my baby.
There were no more secrets, no more silver cups, and no more forced protection.

For the first time in years, my body, my child, and my future belonged entirely to me.
The nightmare was finally over, and our real life had just begun.
