Chapter 2 - The Hospital Sanctuary

The sterile smell of the emergency room felt like the safest scent in the entire world.

The doctors hooked me up to fetal monitors, assuring me that my baby girl’s heartbeat was perfectly strong and steady.

I knew I was not actually in premature labor, but I needed the hospital to act as my temporary fortress.

Julian was pacing like a caged predator in the waiting room, completely barred from entering my private suite.

I pulled out my cell phone, my hands shaking violently as I dialed the only person I could trust with my life.

Elena was an incredibly sharp, ruthless private investigator I had met years ago at a charity gala.

When she answered, I did not waste time with pleasantries or tearful introductions.

"Julian is trying to kill me, and he has been stealing my money for seven years," I whispered frantically into the receiver.

Elena did not hesitate, immediately asking for my exact location and room number.

She promised to be there in less than twenty minutes with a secure burner phone and a plan.

While I waited, a young nurse came in to check my vitals and offer me a cup of warm tea.

I looked at the tea and suddenly felt a sickening wave of absolute nausea wash over my entire body.

Julian had been brewing me special herbal tea every single night for the past three months to "help me sleep."

I had been experiencing terrifying dizzy spells and memory loss, which he conveniently blamed on my pregnancy hormones.

I realized with absolute, horrifying clarity that my own husband had been slowly poisoning me in our kitchen.

He was weakening my body, preparing to stage my tragic, untimely death during childbirth.

When Elena finally slipped into my hospital room wearing medical scrubs as a disguise, I completely broke down.

I handed her my compromised cell phone, knowing Julian had likely installed tracking software on it months ago.

She handed me an untraceable burner phone and a small, discreet digital recording device.

"You have to go back to him tonight and pretend the scare was just a hormonal panic attack," Elena instructed grimly.

"We need exactly forty-eight hours to freeze your assets and gather the concrete proof of his previous murders."

I touched my pregnant belly, absolutely terrified of stepping back into the monster's hidden lair.

But I knew that if I wanted to destroy him completely, I had to play the role of the oblivious, loving wife one last time.
