Chapter 14 - The Stand-Off

I took a sharp step backward, instinctively shielding my baby's delicate head with my body, ready to take a bullet for him.
"You are never touching him, Julian, it is over!" I screamed back, feeling a surge of absolute, fearless adrenaline.
Julian raised the gun, his hands shaking violently, completely stripped of the charming, confident billionaire persona he always wore.
He looked entirely pathetic, a desperate, broken man trying to cling to the last shred of power he possessed.
"I will shoot this nurse and drag you into this car myself, do not test me, Clara," he threatened, his voice cracking slightly.
Elena stepped bravely in front of me, raising the heavy fire extinguisher like a massive, blunt weapon.
Before Julian could take another step forward, the piercing shriek of police sirens shattered the tense silence of the parking lot.
Red and blue lights violently flashed across the brick walls as three armored police cruisers swarmed into the alleyway.
Federal agents poured out of the vehicles, raising their assault rifles and aiming the blinding tactical lights directly at my husband.
"Drop the weapon, Julian Vance! Put your hands directly on top of your head!" a commanding voice barked over a megaphone.
Julian froze, slowly looking around at the massive, heavily armed force completely surrounding his getaway car.
For a single, agonizing second, I genuinely thought he was going to raise the gun and force a deadly shootout.
Instead, the cold reality of his absolute defeat finally washed over his arrogant features, destroying him completely.
He dropped the heavy handgun onto the wet concrete and slowly sank to his knees, lacing his fingers behind his head.
Agents aggressively swarmed him, slamming him face-first into the asphalt and violently clicking cold steel handcuffs around his wrists.
I collapsed against the brick wall, my legs finally giving out, sobbing uncontrollably into the soft blue blanket holding my son.
Elena knelt beside me, wrapping her strong arms around my shaking shoulders while the police secured the area entirely.

Through my tears, I watched the monster who had terrorized me get shoved roughly into the back of a police cruiser.
The nightmare was finally, permanently over.
