Chapter 11 - The Heir

The next four hours were an agonizing blur of pain, bright lights, and the suffocating presence of my husband pacing the room.
Every time I cried out from a contraction, Julian would flinch, not out of sympathy, but out of pure annoyance at the noise.
Elena moved around the room silently, doing her job perfectly while constantly shooting me subtle, reassuring glances.
I focused entirely on her face, drawing strength from the fact that I finally had an ally inside this luxurious nightmare.
At exactly 2:14 AM, the room erupted into chaos as the doctor yelled for me to push with everything I had left.
I pushed through the blinding pain, screaming out in a mixture of total exhaustion and fierce, primal determination.
Suddenly, the absolute most beautiful sound in the universe filled the sterile room—the sharp, healthy cry of my newborn son.
Tears poured down my face as the doctor placed a tiny, warm, wriggling body directly onto my bare chest.
"It's a boy, Mrs. Vance, perfectly healthy despite arriving a month early," the doctor announced with a massive, relieved smile.
I wrapped my arms around my baby, kissing his wet forehead, promising him silently that his life would be completely free of fear.
Julian stepped forward, looking down at the baby with a cold, possessive satisfaction rather than fatherly love.
"He is an heir, Clara, you finally did something entirely useful," Julian sneered quietly, a sick smile stretching across his face.
He didn't touch the baby; he just looked at him like a brand new asset added to his vast, corrupt portfolio.
Before I could even hold him for five minutes, the lead doctor gently took the baby from my arms.
"He needs to go to the private NICU for a standard observation, just a precaution for premature babies," the doctor explained quickly.
My heart completely shattered as they wheeled his tiny bassinet out of the room, leaving me completely empty and terrified.

Julian looked at me, completely triumphant, knowing he now possessed the ultimate leverage to keep me in line forever.
I lay back on the pillows, exhausted but fiercely clinging to the hope that Elena had successfully sent that text message.
