Chapter 6 - The Two-Million-Dollar Motive

I stared at her, the pieces slowly sliding into a horrifying puzzle. "Sarah was a school teacher," I said slowly. "She didn't have money."

"She had a patent," Elena confessed, her voice barely a whisper. "Before you met her. She developed an educational software algorithm in college. She sold it to a massive tech firm right before she got sick. Dad found out. It was worth nearly eight million dollars, Marcus."

My head spun. Sarah had never mentioned it. Or maybe she was waiting to surprise us when the deal finalized, but the cancer took her too fast.

"She put it entirely in a blind trust for Leo," Elena continued, weeping into her hands. "But with Sarah gone, and if you and Leo... if you didn't survive that trip... the money defaults to her next of kin. And Dad forged documents making himself the primary executor of your estate. He needed you both to disappear in the woods so he could claim it all and save his failing company."

The absolute monstrous reality of it hit me. My father hadn't just abandoned me out of spite. He had tried to murder his own son and his eight-year-old grandson to cover a bad corporate investment.

"Where is he?" I asked, my voice devoid of any human emotion. I was no longer a brother or a son. I was an executioner.

"He's hosting a dinner party inside," she gasped. "Marcus, please, don't kill him. Let the police handle it." "The police belong to him," I said, turning away. "But tonight, he belongs to me."
