Chapter 2 - The Empty Vault

Two days later, I checked myself out of the hospital against medical advice. My feet were wrapped in heavy gauze, and I walked with a cane, but the burning rage in my chest fueled every step. I had to secure my home and my assets before Arthur could dig his claws in any deeper. I left Leo under the strict, 24-hour watch of Sarah’s sister, Rachel, who despised my parents as much as I did.
When I unlocked the front door of my suburban home, the silence was suffocating. But something was wrong. The air felt disturbed. I limped into my home office and found my filing cabinets pried open. My laptop was missing. The safe hidden behind the bookshelf was hanging wide open, completely cleaned out.

I pulled out my phone and dialed my bank. After twenty agonizing minutes on hold with the fraud department, the representative delivered the fatal blow. "Mr. Thorne, your joint accounts were emptied three days ago by Arthur Thorne. He presented a Power of Attorney document, citing your recent... medical incapacitation."
They had planned this for months. The "family healing retreat" was a carefully orchestrated trap. While I was starving in the freezing woods, holding my shivering son, my father was legally erasing my existence and stealing everything I had built for Leo's future. I hung up the phone, staring at the empty wall. I didn't have money. I didn't have a car. But I had something Arthur Thorne severely underestimated: the ruthless, unyielding desperation of a father with nothing left to lose.
