Chapter 12 - The Cornered Beast

Vance drove me back to my motel to collect my things. "We fly back to New York tonight," he said. "Leo is safe with Rachel. You get to go home."
But as we pulled into the motel parking lot, my heart stopped. The door to my cheap room was kicked open, the wood splintered around the frame. I drew my survival knife, motioning for Vance to stay back, and slowly entered the room.
It had been ransacked. The mattress was slashed, and my few belongings were scattered. But that wasn't what froze my blood. Pinned to the bathroom mirror with a heavy hunting knife was a photograph.
It was a picture of Rachel’s house in New York. Taken from the street.
Written in red marker across the bottom were the words: You took my life. I'm taking yours. See you at home, son.
"Elias," I said, my voice dangerously hollow. "Where is Arthur right now?"

Vance furiously typed on his phone. "He made bail an hour ago. The judge hadn't seen the federal indictment yet."
He was out. He had a head start. And he was going after Leo. I didn't bother packing. I sprinted back to the car. "Get us to the airport, Vance. Call Rachel. Tell her to lock the doors and get his father's gun out of the safe. We have a flight to catch."
