Chapter 8 - The Final Ultimatum

The loss of her vacation fund pushed Chloe over the edge into pure, unadulterated venom.
On Wednesday afternoon, a thick, registered envelope arrived at my house.
I signed for it, feeling a strange weight in the paper as I carried it to the kitchen counter.
Inside was a letter typed on expensive, thick cardstock, signed by my father.
It wasn't an apology.
It was an ultimatum.
The letter stated that my public Facebook post had caused "irreparable emotional distress" to the family.
It demanded that I write a public apology to Chloe, retracting my statements and claiming it was a misunderstanding.
It also demanded that I reimburse Chloe for the $2,100 she had been forced to pay Uncle Mark.
If I did not comply within forty-eight hours, I would be permanently removed from his will.
I read the letter three times, making sure I wasn't hallucinating the sheer delusion of his words.
He was actually trying to hold a hypothetical future inheritance over my head to buy my silence.
I thought about the house Tom and I owned, the college funds we had set up for the twins, and the life we had built.
We didn't need my father's money.
We never had.
The threat was entirely empty, built on the assumption that I was still the scared little girl desperate for his approval.
I took a red Sharpie out of the junk drawer.
I didn't write a long, emotional response.
I didn't try to explain my feelings or beg him to understand my perspective.
I simply wrote two words across the bottom of his formal letter in giant red letters.
"KEEP IT."
I folded the letter back up, slid it into a new envelope, and mailed it right back to him.
Walking away from the mailbox, I felt a physical weight lift off my chest.

The chain wasn't just snapped anymore; it was completely dissolved.
I was officially an orphan by choice, and it was the most liberating feeling in the world.
