Chapter 5 - The Nuclear Option

By Saturday morning, the family group chat was a war zone.
Chloe had escalated her campaign from vague Facebook posts to direct attacks.
She posted a new status, tagging me directly.
"It's disgusting how my sister Sarah financially abused our elderly father on his birthday."
"She invited everyone, ran up a massive bill, and then sneaked out like a coward, leaving our dad to face the police."
"She is dead to this family."
The comments were a mess of shocked friends, judgmental in-laws, and angry cousins.
My phone was blowing up with people demanding I explain myself.
Tom read the post over my shoulder and let out a heavy sigh.
"Are you going to let her control the narrative?" he asked gently.
"No," I said, feeling a strange sense of absolute calm wash over me.
"I'm going to burn her narrative to the ground."
I opened my photos app and found the screenshots I had taken the night of the dinner.
I had the reservation confirmation showing my name and my $750 deposit.
I had the text from Chloe demanding I fix the $2,100 bill.
I also had a text she sent me months ago, where she specifically demanded we order the most expensive wine because "Dad deserves it."
I opened Facebook and started typing, making sure my post was set to public.
"Since my sister wants to discuss finances and family loyalty publicly, let's clear the air."
"I planned and put down a $750 non-refundable deposit for my father's dinner."
"When I arrived with my eight-year-old twins holding a handmade gift, Chloe looked at my children and said they were 'annoying' and there was no room for them."
"My father agreed, and told me to leave."
"So, I left."
"I am not a bank for people who emotionally abuse my children."
"I froze my card because I will not pay $2,100 for a dinner I was kicked out of."
I attached all the screenshots, including a photo of the sad, beautiful terracotta planter sitting on my kitchen counter.
I tagged Chloe.
I tagged my dad.
I tagged Uncle Mark.

I took a deep breath, and I hit post.
Then, I turned off my notifications and went to make pancakes for my kids.
