Chapter 6 - The Tides Turn

It only took fifteen minutes for the internet to do what the internet does best.

When I finally checked my laptop after breakfast, the post had over a hundred comments.

The court of public opinion had convened, and the verdict was unanimous.

Chloe's friends, who had been supporting her just an hour earlier, were suddenly backpedaling.

One of her own bridesmaids commented, "Wait, you kicked your niece and nephew out over a dinner?"

Uncle Mark chimed in directly on the thread.

"Sarah, I had no idea they told you to leave; I was at the bar getting a drink when you walked out."

"Chloe, you owe me $2,100, and I expect it by Monday morning."

The sheer panic radiating from Chloe's side of the digital world was palpable.

She desperately tried to delete her original post, but people had already taken screenshots.

She tried to untag herself from my post, but the damage was already done.

Her own mother-in-law commented, "Chloe, this is incredibly shameful behavior."

My dad's phone must have been ringing off the hook, because he sent me a single, frantic text.

"Take it down, Sarah, you are ruining your sister's reputation!"

I didn't reply.

I just blocked his number.

I blocked Chloe's number, too.

The silence that followed wasn't just peaceful; it was victorious.

For thirty-five years, I had been the family sponge, absorbing their toxicity to keep the peace.

Now, I was the mirror, forcing them to look at their own ugly reflections.

Tom walked up behind me, resting his chin on my shoulder as he read the comments.

"You know they're going to call an emergency family meeting, right?" he chuckled.

"Let them," I said, closing the laptop with a satisfying click.

"I won't be attending."

The truth was out there, fully documented, and mathematically undeniable.

Chloe couldn't spin her way out of a bank statement, and Dad couldn't cry his way out of a public text message.
