Chapter 8 - Into the Fire

The warehouse was a cavernous nightmare of stacked shipping containers and flickering halogen lights.
Marcus and a dozen heavily armed cartel members were waiting inside.
Victor didn't bother with negotiations or demands.
He gave a subtle hand signal, and his men unleashed absolute hell.
Gunfire erupted like thunder, echoing deafeningly off the corrugated metal walls.
I covered my ears, staying low behind a stack of wooden pallets, my eyes frantically searching for Maya.
Through the smoke and chaos, I spotted a small, pink bundle resting on a rusted metal table near the back office.
Maya was crying, terrified by the noise, but she appeared unhurt.
Marcus was pinned down by Victor's suppressive fire, desperately trying to reload his weapon.
I didn't think; I simply acted on pure maternal instinct.
While Victor and his men drew the cartel's fire, I sprinted along the dark perimeter of the warehouse.
My lungs burned, and adrenaline drowned out my fear.
I reached the table just as Marcus noticed my movement.
He raised his gun, aiming directly at my chest.
Before he could pull the trigger, Victor emerged from the shadows like a demon.
He didn't shoot Marcus; he tackled him with brutal, bone-crushing force.
I grabbed Maya, pressing her face into my shoulder to shield her eyes.
Victor stood over Marcus, his face devoid of any mercy.

Two loud shots echoed, and Marcus stopped moving entirely.
The warehouse fell dead silent.
