Chapter 4 - The DNA Results

By the end of the week, Vanessa was gone, but she didn’t leave quietly. True to her vindictive nature, she leaked a story to the local tabloids that I was being scammed by a homeless ex-wife. The board of directors at my tech firm was in an uproar, demanding I take a DNA test to "protect the company's assets."
I didn’t need a test to know they were mine, but Sarah insisted.
“Let’s do it,” she said one morning, feeding Mia a bottle in the sunlit kitchen. The dark circles under her eyes were fading, and she was starting to look like the woman I remembered. “I want it in writing. For them. So no one can ever question their place in this world.”
We went to the clinic together. Two days later, the envelope arrived.
99.9% probability.
I framed the paper and set it on the kitchen island. Eleanor threw a small, impromptu celebration, bringing over balloons and a massive cake. For the first time in over a year, the house echoed with laughter.
Later that night, after the twins were asleep, I found Sarah standing on the balcony, looking out over the city lights.
“Thank you,” she said quietly without turning around. “For believing me. For not making me fight you.”
“You shouldn't have had to fight to begin with,” I replied, standing beside her. “I’m so sorry, Sarah. For everything. For getting so obsessed with the business that I lost you. For not being there.”

She looked up at me, tears glistening in her eyes. “I was so scared, Julian. When the money ran out… when the landlord locked me out… I thought I had failed them.”
I pulled her into my arms. She stiffened for a second before melting into my chest, sobbing quietly. I held her tight, swearing silently that I would spend the rest of my life making up for the pain she had endured.
