Chapter 8 - The Fall of the House of Sterling

The collapse of the Sterling empire was absolute and immediate.
Within an hour of our confrontation on the sidewalk, federal agents raided the Sterling Heritage Estates corporate offices.
News helicopters circled their massive Weston estate, capturing the chaos live on local television.
I sat in Marcus's living room with Clara, watching the breaking news.
"Authorities have just issued arrest warrants for Julian and Victoria Sterling," the news anchor announced.
"Sources say the evidence provided by an anonymous whistleblower reveals millions in stolen investor funds."
Clara watched the screen as Julian was led out of his corporate building in handcuffs, hiding his face behind a briefcase.
"It's over," Clara whispered, tears of relief finally streaming down her face.
"He can never hurt me again."
I wrapped a blanket around her shoulders and kissed the top of her head.
"I told you, my sweet girl. We were never going to let them win."
The phone rang, and Marcus answered it.
It was my landlord, Mr. Henderson, sounding incredibly apologetic.
"Eleanor, the city just lifted the condemnation order," he said quickly.
"Turns out the official who issued it was just arrested for taking bribes from the Sterlings."
"Your bakery is safe. You can reopen tomorrow."
I smiled, feeling the heavy weight of the past three days finally lift from my chest.

Julian had tried to use his wealth and power to crush a working-class widow.
He forgot that people who work with their hands know how to fight back.
