Chapter 1 - The Clock Starts

The drive back to Boston was a blur of gray rain and silent tears.

Clara stared out the passenger window, her body shivering despite the car's heater blasting on full.

I knew Julian would expect us to go straight to our small apartment above the bakery.

That was exactly why I took the highway heading south instead.

"Where are we going, Mom?" Clara whispered, her voice barely audible over the roaring engine.

"To see Uncle Marcus," I replied, keeping my eyes fixed on the slick road.

Marcus wasn't blood, but he was a retired Boston police detective who owed his life to my late husband.

When we arrived at his modest brick duplex, Marcus took one look at Clara's bruised cheek and pulled us inside without a word.

He locked the heavy deadbolt and poured Clara a mug of hot tea.

"Julian Sterling did this?" Marcus asked, his voice low and dangerous.

I nodded, pacing the length of his worn living room rug.

"He gave me seventy-two hours to bring her back begging, or he claims he will ruin my business and our lives," I explained.

Marcus let out a dry, humorless laugh.

"Rich boys always think their money makes them bulletproof," he said, pulling out a burner phone from his desk drawer.

"Let him try to ruin you, Eleanor. We have three days to ruin him first."

Clara looked up from her tea, her eyes wide with a mix of fear and sudden hope.

"You don't understand, Mom," she said softly. "Julian isn't just cruel, he's a criminal."

I stopped pacing and stared at my daughter.

"What do you mean, sweetie?" I asked, kneeling beside her chair.

Clara took a deep breath, wincing as her bruised jaw moved.

"The reason I was cleaning his study at 3 a.m. wasn't just because of his mother," she confessed.

"I found a hidden flash drive taped under his desk drawer when I was dusting."

Marcus leaned forward, his detective instincts instantly flaring to life.

"What was on the drive, Clara?" he asked intently.

"Ledgers," she whispered. "Proof that Sterling Heritage Estates has been money laundering for a local syndicate for the past five years."

A cold silence fell over the room.

Julian hadn't just given me seventy-two hours to save my bakery; he had given me seventy-two hours to take down his entire empire.
