Chapter 8 - The Confession

As the trial date approached, Julian's fragile psyche completely shattered. He couldn't handle the violence and isolation of the county jail. He requested a meeting with the District Attorney, offering to spill every single secret his mother had ever kept in exchange for a reduced sentence.
The DA allowed me to view the proffer session from behind a two-way mirror.
Julian sat at a metal table, looking gaunt and terrified, his hands shaking as he held a paper cup of water.
"She planned it for months," Julian babbled to the prosecutor, tears streaming down his face. "She started swapping Arthur's medication. She gave him muscle relaxers instead of his blood pressure pills, hoping he would have a stroke. When that didn't work, she staged the fall on the stairs. She told me to forge the documents while he was in the ICU. She said Victoria was never coming back, that we could take it all."
Behind the glass, I felt a cold knot tighten in my stomach. The depths of her depravity were worse than I had imagined. She hadn't just been a gold digger; she was a calculated predator.
"Will you testify to this in front of a jury?" the prosecutor asked.
May you like
"Yes! Yes, I swear to God! Just don't put me in maximum security!" Julian begged.
I turned away from the glass and walked out of the precinct. Julian had just guaranteed his mother would die in a federal penitentiary. The parasites were feeding on each other.
