Chapter 2 - Echoes on the Tape

The living room felt exactly the same, yet entirely foreign. The smell of lemon polish and stale tobacco was identical, but the air was suffocatingly thick. Chloe sat on the edge of the floral sofa, pulling the small audio cassette from the receipt she had kept folded in her wallet for a decade.

Arthur dusted off an old boombox from the garage, his hands still shaking. He inserted the tape and pressed play.

A heavy crackle of static filled the room, followed by a sharp intake of breath. Then, a voice spoke.

“Chloe, if you’re listening to this, it means I didn’t make it out of the yard tonight.”

Helen clamped a hand over her mouth, fresh tears spilling down her cheeks. It was Marcus. His voice was rushed, laced with a raw panic that made the hairs on Arthur's arms stand up.

“I found the manifests, babe. Vance isn't just moving electronics. The crates in sector four are full of unregistered firearms and illicit narcotics. Millions of dollars' worth. I tried to go to the police, but the chief of police was in Vance’s office today. They’re all in on it.”

Arthur’s face turned the color of ash. Vance was the yard director. He had been the one to personally inform Arthur of Marcus’s "accident." He had even paid for the funeral catering.

“Arthur is a good man, Chloe, but he’s blind to what Vance is,” the tape continued. “If they find out about you, or the baby, they’ll use you as leverage. Or worse. You have to run. Don't tell your dad. Don't tell anyone. I hid the real shipping ledgers behind the drywall in the old mechanics' locker room. I love you, Chloe. Protect our baby.”

The tape clicked, plunging the room into a devastating silence.

Arthur fell to his knees in the middle of the living room, burying his face in his grease-stained hands. The man he had respected, the company he had given thirty years of his life to, had murdered his protégé and forced his only daughter into exile.

“My god,” Arthur wept, the sound tearing from his chest. “What have I done? I threw you out into the street.”

Chloe knelt beside her father, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder. “You didn't know, Dad. But Vance thinks the ledgers are gone. He thinks Marcus took the secret to his grave. But we have to get them. We have to finish what Marcus started.”
