Chapter 6 - Cornered Animal

Desperation is a dangerous emotion for a man who has lost everything.

Adrian spent the next forty-eight hours trying to hire a lawyer.

He needed a shark, someone who could freeze Claire’s assets and fight for emergency custody of Noah.

He walked into the offices of the most prestigious family law firm in Los Angeles.

"I need to speak to Richard Vance," Adrian demanded at the front desk.

Ten minutes later, a well-dressed attorney walked out, shaking his head.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Vale, but we cannot represent you."

"I have money!" Adrian lied, knowing his credit cards were bouncing.

"It’s not about the money," Vance replied coldly.

"Your wife came in for a consultation last month and paid a retainer."

"It’s a conflict of interest for us to even speak to you."

Adrian gritted his teeth and drove to the next firm.

Then the next.

Then the next.

Every top-tier lawyer in the state of California gave him the exact same answer.

Claire had spent the last six months meeting with every formidable divorce attorney in the region.

She had paid them minimum retainers just to conflict them out of representing him.

It was a classic, ruthless tactic, and it had worked flawlessly.

Finally, Adrian was forced to walk into a run-down strip mall office.

He hired a sweaty, inexperienced lawyer named Jenkins who charged by the hour.

"We need to file for emergency custody," Adrian barked at Jenkins.

"She kidnapped my son across state lines!"

Jenkins nervously pushed his glasses up his nose.

"Well, technically, there was no custody agreement in place when she left."

"I don't care!" Adrian exploded. "Call the police! Call the FBI!"

He was going to destroy her, no matter what it took.
