Chapter 3 - The Ghost Apartment

Adrian did not sleep that night.

He drove straight from his parents’ house to Savannah’s luxury oceanfront apartment in San Diego.

He needed answers.

He needed someone to choke.

He slammed his fist against Savannah’s door, not caring if he woke the neighbors.

"Savannah!" he roared. "Open the door!"

There was no answer.

He tried the handle, and to his surprise, it clicked open.

Adrian burst into the apartment, ready to tear the place apart.

But there was nothing to tear apart.

The apartment was completely empty.

The expensive Italian leather sofas, the modern art, the silver spoons—everything was gone.

It looked as though no one had lived there for months.

The only thing left was a single, cheap burner phone sitting in the middle of the kitchen island.

Adrian walked toward it slowly, his heart hammering against his ribs.

The screen lit up as he approached.

There was one unplayed audio message.

With a trembling finger, Adrian pressed play.

Savannah’s voice echoed through the empty kitchen, but it lacked the sweet, needy tone she usually used with him.

"If you’re hearing this, Adrian, it means my contract is officially complete," she said, sounding bored.

"You really are the most gullible man I’ve ever met."

Adrian squeezed his eyes shut, his face burning with humiliation.

"Claire says hello, by the way," Savannah’s voice continued.

"She told me to tell you that the caviar you fed me yesterday was bought with your own severance package."

The message ended with a sharp click.

Adrian threw the phone against the wall, shattering it into a dozen pieces.

He was entirely alone.
