Chapter 9 - Blood and Marble

Enzo dragged Harper down the servant's staircase toward the underground safe room. The sounds of a firefight echoed through the massive stone halls of the mansion.

Suddenly, the kitchen door splintered open. Two men in tactical gear stepped through, raising their rifles.

Enzo pushed Harper behind him, firing three rounds in rapid succession. The first man dropped, but the second returned fire. A bullet grazed Enzo’s shoulder, making him grit his teeth. He fired again, taking the second man down.

"Enzo! You're bleeding!" Harper cried, pressing her hands over the tear in his jacket.

"I'm fine," he grunted, reloading.

He looked at her. She wasn't crying. She wasn't shaking. The girl who had collapsed over a torn wedding dress was gone. In her place was a woman who was learning how to survive the underworld.

"Can you shoot?" he asked.

"No."

"Stay behind me. If I fall, you take the gun and you run."

Harper shook her head fiercely. "I'm not leaving you."
