Chapter 8 - The Desperate Play

Preston was a cornered rat, and cornered rats bite.
Bankrupt, publicly humiliated, and facing federal prison, Preston knew his only leverage was the grandfather clause in Harper's trust fund. If Harper died before turning twenty-five, the untouchable millions reverted to him.
Enzo was in his home office when the perimeter alarms blared. Red lights flashed across the security monitors.
"Mateo!" Enzo roared, pulling his Glock from the desk drawer.
"Three SUVs just rammed the south gate," Mateo's voice crackled over the radio, followed by the sound of gunfire. "Mercenaries. Heavily armed. They're making a push for the house."

Enzo didn't care about the house. He sprinted up the stairs, taking them two at a time. He burst into the master suite. Harper was standing by the window, her eyes wide with terror as she watched the flashes of gunfire on the lawn.
"We need to move. Now," Enzo barked, grabbing her hand.
