Chapter 9 - Justice Served

The cold, heavy steel of the handcuffs clicked loudly around Charles Herrera's wrists, binding his hands securely behind his back.

The sound echoed through the massive marble lobby, a brutal, undeniable punctuation mark on the end of his luxurious life.

The customers who had been humiliated, ignored, and dismissed by this very bank now pulled out their phones again.

But this time, they were not recording a helpless elderly woman being bullied by an arrogant bank president.

They were recording the spectacular, deeply satisfying downfall of a corrupt millionaire.

Charles fought against the federal agents, his expensive Italian suit tearing at the shoulder seam as he thrashed.

"You cannot do this to me!" Charles screamed, completely losing the last shred of his carefully crafted corporate dignity.

"I am the president of this bank! I play golf with the mayor!"

Agent Carter simply tightened her grip on his arm, her expression entirely devoid of any sympathy.

"Not anymore, Mr. Herrera," the agent stated flatly.

"You are going to a federal holding facility, and given the massive flight risk you pose, I highly doubt a judge will grant you bail."

As they dragged him toward the grand glass doors, Charles locked eyes with Evelyn one final time.

She was standing near the teller counter where this entire confrontation had begun barely an hour ago.

"You ruined my life!" Charles shrieked, spit flying from his lips as he directed his absolute hatred at her.

"You took everything from me over a stupid bakery loan!"

Evelyn walked slowly toward him, the crowd parting instantly to let her pass, treating her with the reverence of a conquering queen.

She stopped just a few feet away from him, looking down at the handcuffed, broken man.

"I didn't take anything from you, Charles," she said softly, but her voice carried perfectly through the silent lobby.

"I simply showed the world exactly who you are."

"You built your life on a foundation of greed, bigotry, and stolen money."

"I just removed the foundation."

She reached out and gently straightened his ruined, crooked silk tie, a gesture of pure, condescending pity.

"Enjoy prison, Mr. Herrera," Evelyn whispered.

"I hear the accommodations are significantly less luxurious than your corner office."

Charles opened his mouth to scream another insult, but the federal agents violently shoved him forward, marching him out into the bright city sunlight.

The flashing lights of the FBI vehicles illuminated his tear-stained face as he was shoved roughly into the back of a black SUV.

Inside the bank, the remaining board members, including Richard Sterling, were being paraded out in a similar fashion.

The old-money billionaires looked completely terrified, hiding their faces from the cameras as their decades of corruption finally caught up with them.

The lobby erupted into a massive, deafening cheer, a spontaneous celebration of justice that the city had desperately needed.

Evelyn watched the police cars drive away, her face perfectly composed, but a deep, profound sense of peace finally settling into her soul.
