Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

The grand lobby of First Sterling Financial was finally quiet again, but the heavy, oppressive atmosphere of the morning had completely vanished.

The federal agents had secured the building, and the last of the corrupt executives had been hauled away in disgrace.

Evelyn Vance stood at the center of the marble floor, looking up at the high, vaulted ceilings of the institution she now truly owned.

She turned to Janet, who was sitting quietly on a lobby bench, still clutching the binder of evidence, looking completely exhausted and terrified for her own future.

"Janet," Evelyn called out softly, her voice carrying a warmth that had been entirely absent during her interactions with Charles.

Janet jumped up immediately, wiping her eyes and standing at attention.

"Yes, Mrs. Vance," Janet replied nervously, fully expecting to be fired for her complicity in the bank's operations, despite her ultimate help.

Evelyn walked over and placed a gentle, reassuring hand on the younger woman's shoulder.

"You were forced into a terrible position by terrible men, but when the moment mattered, you chose to do the right thing," Evelyn said kindly.

"You risked your own freedom to secure the evidence I needed to put those monsters behind bars."

Janet let out a shaky breath, a fresh wave of relieved tears threatening to spill over.

"I am so sorry I didn't say anything sooner," Janet whispered, looking down at her shoes.

"Courage often takes time to build," Evelyn smiled, lifting Janet's chin so she would look her in the eye.

"This bank needs a complete restructuring, starting from the very top."

"I am officially appointing you as the new interim President of the retail banking division, effective immediately."

Janet gasped loudly, her hands flying to her mouth in absolute shock.

"Me? But I am just a branch manager!" Janet stammered.

"You are a woman with a conscience, which makes you infinitely more qualified than the man who just left in handcuffs," Evelyn stated firmly.

"Your first order of business is to take the millions of dollars we are about to recover from their offshore accounts and establish a community development fund."

"I want zero-interest business loans approved for every single minority applicant that Charles Herrera unfairly rejected."

Janet nodded vigorously, a bright, genuine smile finally breaking across her face.

"I won't let you down, Mrs. Vance, I promise," Janet swore, gripping the binder tightly to her chest.

Evelyn nodded, knowing she had made the right choice in trusting the one person who had shown a shred of humanity in this cold building.

She turned away from the counter and began walking slowly toward the grand glass exit doors.

The remaining customers and the honest bank employees actually parted to form a respectful walkway for her.

Evelyn stepped out of the heavy glass doors and into the warm, bright sunlight of the bustling city street.

She took a deep breath of the fresh air, feeling lighter than she had in four decades.

She didn't need to look back at the massive stone building behind her.

May you like

She tapped her wooden cane against the pavement, a steady, triumphant rhythm.

Justice had not only been served; it had been purchased, paid for, and delivered in full.
