Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

The cleanup was handled with professional, terrifying efficiency. By dawn, the body was gone, the glass was replaced, and the police had conveniently received no noise complaints from the exclusive building.

Julian had moved Clara, her father, and Mia to his private estate in the Hamptons. The sprawling oceanfront property was heavily guarded, a fortress disguised as a paradise.

For three days, Clara barely spoke. The reality of the violence, the sheer brutality of Julian’s world, had finally crashed down on her.

Julian gave her space, but he never left the property. He worked from the study, constantly checking on her, ensuring her father had his treatments, ensuring she ate. He was terrified he had lost her. That the monster she had seen kill a man in her hallway had finally driven her away.

On the fourth evening, Julian was standing on the beach behind the house, staring out at the dark, churning ocean. The wind whipped his coat around him.

He heard soft footsteps in the sand.

Clara walked up beside him. She was wearing one of his heavy knit sweaters, her arms crossed against the cold.

“He would have killed me,” Clara said quietly, looking out at the water.

“I know,” Julian replied, his jaw clenched tight. “I’m sorry you had to see that, Clara. I’m sorry I brought that violence to your door. If you want to leave… if you want to take your family and go somewhere safe, I will fund it. You will never have to see me again.”

The words physically hurt him to say, but he owed her a choice.

Clara turned to look at him. She looked at the hardened mob boss, the man who commanded armies, standing before her waiting for a sentence like a condemned man.

“When I was invisible, the world was safe, but it was incredibly cold,” Clara said softly. “You dragged me into the light. It’s violent, and it’s terrifying, Julian. But for the first time in my life, I don’t feel like I’m fighting alone.”

Julian closed his eyes, a heavy breath escaping him.

“I don't want to leave,” Clara whispered, reaching out and sliding her hand into his. “I want to stay. With you.”

Julian turned, pulling her into his arms, kissing her fiercely against the backdrop of the crashing waves. He knew his world would never be truly safe. But he knew, with absolute certainty, that he would burn the entire city to the ground to keep her warm.
