Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

Recovery was slow, agonizing, and wrapped in absolute luxury.
Two weeks later, Clara was discharged. She wasn't taken to a tenement in Queens. She was driven in a tinted Maybach to a sprawling, high-security penthouse in Tribeca.
When Mateo escorted her inside, Clara stopped dead in the foyer. The walls were floor-to-ceiling glass, overlooking the Hudson River. Her younger sister, Mia, came running from the kitchen, throwing her arms carefully around Clara’s neck.
“Clara! You’re okay!” Mia sobbed, holding her tight.
Clara hugged her sister back, looking over her shoulder. Her father, Robert, was sitting in a plush recliner, a state-of-the-art oxygen concentrator humming quietly beside him. He looked healthier than he had in years.
“Mia,” Clara whispered, overwhelmed. “How… what did they tell you?”
“Mr. Thorne’s people said you were promoted to executive estate manager,” Mia beamed. “They said this apartment is a corporate perk. Clara, they paid my entire nursing tuition! We don’t have to worry anymore.”
Clara felt a knot of profound anxiety tighten in her chest. Julian had essentially bought her family’s survival. It was a beautiful, terrifying gift. But she knew men like Julian Thorne didn’t do charity. There was always a cost.
That evening, as Clara was sitting alone on the massive terrace wrapped in a blanket, the front door unlocked. Julian stepped into the penthouse. He shrugged off his coat, looking directly at her.
He walked out onto the terrace, handing her a mug of hot tea.
“Is it to your liking?” Julian asked, leaning against the glass railing, looking out at the city lights.
“It’s too much,” Clara said honestly, clutching the warm mug. “Julian, I am grateful. I truly am. But I am a maid. I don’t know how to navigate this world. I feel like a hostage in a golden cage.”
Julian frowned, turning to look at her. “You are not a hostage. You are free to leave whenever you wish. But right now, Silas Vance is still breathing. He knows you ruined his assassination attempt. He knows you saved me. That makes you a target.”
Clara shivered, wrapping the blanket tighter. “Have you found him?”
“Not yet,” Julian’s eyes darkened, the lethal crime boss momentarily surfacing. “He’s hiding behind the Moretti family. They’re using him to try and dismantle my shipping ports. It’s going to get bloody, Clara.”
He stepped closer, crouching down so he was at eye level with her. The scent of bergamot and expensive leather washed over her.
“I put you in this penthouse because it is a fortress,” Julian said softly. “I put you here because the thought of you in a drafty apartment in Queens, where anyone could kick in the door, keeps me awake at night. Let me keep you safe. Just until I finish this.”

Clara looked into his dark, intense eyes. For the first time in her life, she didn't feel invisible. She felt entirely, terrifyingly seen.
She slowly nodded. “Okay.”
