Chapter 10 - The Syndicate Queen

That evening, a massive gala was held at the Plaza Hotel to celebrate the launch of the new Thorne Foundation. The ballroom was packed with politicians, celebrities, and the quiet, dangerous men who truly ran the city.
Julian stood near the balcony, a glass of bourbon in his hand. He wore a classic black tuxedo, looking untouchable.
He watched Clara navigate the room. She was speaking to the mayor, laughing politely, holding her own among the elite. She looked radiant.
Sofia, wearing a dark blue gown, walked up and stood beside her father. “She’s good at this,” the teenager noted, smiling as she watched Clara gracefully excuse herself from the mayor.
“She’s better than good,” Julian murmured. “She’s the only real thing in this entire room.”
Clara made her way through the crowd, finally reaching Julian. She slipped her arm through his, leaning close.
“The mayor wants to give you a commendation for the hospital wing,” Clara whispered, her eyes dancing with amusement. “I didn't have the heart to tell him it was funded by the spoils of the Moretti takeover.”
Julian chuckled, a low, rich sound. “Let him have his illusions. We know the truth.”
Julian set his glass down and gently took Clara’s hand, leading her out through the French doors onto the private balcony. The crisp New York air washed over them, the city glittering below like a sea of stars.
Julian turned to face her. He reached into the inside pocket of his tuxedo jacket and pulled out a small, black velvet box.
Clara’s breath hitched.
Julian didn't drop to one knee. Men like him didn't kneel. Instead, he opened the box, revealing a massive, flawless diamond ring that caught the city light and fractured it into a thousand pieces.
“You stepped in front of a bullet for a monster,” Julian said, his voice thick with emotion, looking deeply into her eyes. “You took a man who lived in the dark and forced him to see the light. You are the heart of this empire, Clara. You are my heart. Marry me.”
Clara looked at the ring, then up at the man who had torn down her decaying world to build her a castle. She remembered the terrified maid standing in the basement garage, wondering if saving him was worth her life.
It was. It was worth every single terrifying second.
“Yes,” Clara whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek. “Yes, Julian. I will.”

Julian slid the ring onto her finger, perfectly sealing the promise. He pulled her flush against his chest, kissing her with the fierce, absolute devotion of a man who had finally found his soul.
They stood together on the balcony, the mafia boss and the maid who became his queen, watching over the city that was, completely and undeniably, theirs.
